HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story

108 bikes turned up by the time we got to Pagoh Toll. Chapters and colors from KL, PJ, Malacca, Johore and even Singapore all turned up despite the initial count of only 30 or so bikes just 24hours before he tyres rolled from the dealership at 0900 hours.

I had to make a sacrifice for this ride and rode an Italian V-Twin instead of my Harley. I need to keep one hand free while riding to snap the shutter, and the clutchless Italian was a better proposition than my beloved 45 degree American V-Twin. Armed with an expensive compact, and the cheapest DSLR, I mounted my 210km/h scooter for the trip.

What I rode

What I wish I rode

As always, the early birds will gather at the friendly Mammak stall behind the Dealership for breakfast.

The Ride was the brainchild of Zulkifli, the CEO of Petani brand of Foodstuff and Traditional Drinks and Herbs. With the support of HOG and HDKL, plans were put into action to ensure a trouble free ride, a round trip of 500kms from PJ to Muar and back. Increadibly, Zul is a newbie Harley Rider, having purchased his 105th Anniversarry Softail in March 2009, and recently added an Ultra Classic to his stable. Although new to riding, he has managed to put about 40,000kms in his logbook.  His first group ride as documented here ;
http://www.harleykualalumpur.com/smf/index.php/topic,8.0.html

The Route originated from the Dealership to the RnR at Ayer Keroh, about 145kms, then another 40 kms to the Pagoh Toll where the Muar, JB and Singapore bikers will RV. 4 Police Escorts were also awaiting to Marshall the riders to Parit Jawa for Lunch at the famous Asam Pedas stalls. The Police, under the stewardship of ASP Fauzi, the Head Honcho of Maktab Teknik PDRM graciously invited the convoy to their training Depot. After that the convoy will ride to Muar town for tea at the famous Mee Bandung before returning to KL.

The initial RV point was at the Dealership at 0800, and bikes and riders arrived promptly.

By 0835 there were 58 bikes and a short briefing was held before tyres rolled. Larry was assigned the Road Captain for the outbound leg.

The mandatory Photo Session

Tyres rolled at 0900hrs

Traffic was light towards Nilai on the KLIA Highway

We reached Ayer Keroh RnR in good time for refuelling.

HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story, Part 2

We arrived at the planned Trip stop after being in the saddle for about 90 minutes. Bikes were refuelled and the riders hung out to refresh.

The HOG President gathered the Marshalls and expressed his unhappiness, having observed the convoy being split into a few groups instead of the desired unbroken one.

After debriefing the Marshalls, the riders were reminded to keep proper separation and distance from each other so the convoy can proceed smoothly and safely.

The pillion riders watched from afar, amused.....

After about one hour, the ride continues....

The Rest......

We arrived at the Toll at Tangkak where the Muar, JB and the Singaporeans were waiting one kilometer away. As we passed through the Toll, the welcoming committee were waiting with the Police escorts.

This time the Police gave a briefing for the ride to the lunch event.

Soon it was time to go

HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story, Part 4

108 Harleys passing through this one street town must have been a treat of sight and sound to the residents.

After about 16 kms on narrow roads it was nice to be back on dual carriageway again. The Police did escort duties seamlessly....

HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story, Part 5

There are about 8 stalls there, all famous, all serving the same type of signature dish, fish in hot sour soup.  This stall however caught my eye.....

Opening Hours - 11am till FINISH.....

Lunch was already pre ordered and the dishes came quickly. One of the Muar riders helped out.....

The rest simply started eating.....

HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story, Part 6

It was time to ride again, this time another 25 kms to the Police Technical Training Center.

After 25kms of winding road through Oil Palm Estates we arrived at the Police Training Center.....

The Police led us on a short tour of their facilities... which included a 1.8km tarmac track. They later allowed us to have a free ride. I lost my mind completely......managed to hit 170km/h on the short straight stretch before the high speed right hander....

The Track

Harleys on the track.....

We later were led to the Parade Square where we found an elaborate welcoming ceremony arranged by Zul and his gang there. Truly beyond expectations.....

We had a Kompang welcome....

HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story, Part 7

After the Cultural Event, there was a formal ceremony where some tokens of appreciation were given out to the Police, Harley KL and HOG.

By 1530 we were ready to leave for another makan session, this time Mee Bandung, reputed to be famous since the 1930s...

Refuelling was at a nearby Petronas station

Then onwards to Muar Town....

We took a short detour to the riverbank esplenade

A short ride through Main Street....

Yet another banner awaits......

Now for the Mee Bandung and Satay.....

Two of the Muar Chapter riders, who assisted Zul in making this event a reality.....

HOG Asam Pedas / Mee Bandung Ride, A Photo Story, Final Part....

It was 1700 by the time we got going, with another 200km + ahead of us. The clear but hot day has cooled down to a more bearable temperature. We mounted up and headed to the NKVE with the Police escorts leading the way.

Crossing the Bridge that spans Muar River.....

We arrived at the Tangkak Toll after about 15 minutes leaving Muar town....

Time to say goodbye to the Police Escorts and the Southern Chapters.......

We then rode Northwards towards home in the setting sun.

The final stop was the Ayer Keroh RnR for refuelling. Ahead of us another 138kms to be covered before we reached KL. A last briefing session was held, with Nawi doing Road Captain duty for this leg.

Leaving for the last leg

As we settled down at a constant 120 - 130 km/h cruise, a Ferrati passed the convoy with a Kawasaki Z1000 Superbike in tow.
I lost my mind completely and chased after them on my scooter. The Ferrari eventually gave up after 20 or so kilometers, and I had immense fun playing tag with the Z1000 until he gave up after 20 minutes of 200km/h + fun.

Just before Sg Besi Toll the heavens opened up and released a deluge as if to make up for the very good weather we enjoyed for most part of our ride. The convoy by then has split up, most having chosen their own way home. Some of us ended up at the Dealership fpr hot coffee before proceeding home.

For a ride that was initially planned as a typical Sunday outing with just about 20 - 30 bikes, the ride became an unexpected event, with around 108 bikes turning up. Credit must go to Zul and his Muar friends, The Singaporeans who came up to join in, those from JB as well in making up the numbers. The Police under ASP Fauzi and his team also made the ride a memorable event, hosting us all at their Training Center. Harley KL also provided the support vehicle with HOG being the organising platform. HOG also covered thelunch at Parit Jawa.

Tired, drenched but happy riders at the Dealership....

Till the next ride......cheers from XRIDER
